Accent Modification Programs

Everyone speaks with an accent. An accent in American English can originate from a person who learned English as their second language, or from a native English speaker who lives in certain regions of the United States (also called “dialects”). Accents are typically an asset, and allow a person to communicate their cultural background in the process of everyday conversations. Strong accents can become a problem, however, if listeners focus too much on “how” a person speaks, and not on “what” the person is speaking about. In this case, accent modification can make a significant difference in both professional and personal relationships. The goal is to modify the accent so that the accent becomes an asset, thereby dissolving the “glass ceilings” that are so often encountered by those with strong accents in American English.
